Hangin' out with ...
The Cannons were in a pinch when longtime goaltender Jordan Burke
retired in mid-March last year, only weeks before the start of the season, but
the team moved quickly to find its new top guy
Shortly after the retirement announcement, the team announced
it traded three players and a first-round draft pick to the Chesapeake
Bayhawks for Tyler Fiorito The deal did not disappoint Fiorito played every
possible minute for the Cannons, finishing fourth in the league in goalsagainst average and third in save percentage, while earning his second
consecutive trip to the All-Star game
How did you get started playing lacrosse? "Both my parents
are from Connecticut and didn't know the sport well My dad and
I were throwing a baseball around and my neighbor came over
and told us we were playing the wrong sport He said, 'No one
does that here, you need to play lacrosse' They were the Will
brothers (and) they played at UNC Five years later, when I was
12, they needed a goalie, and I'd hop in cage with them"
What did you think of your first year with the Cannons? "It was a great experience It's a little bit of a younger, less
experienced team than the Bayhawks, which I had been on It
was exciting to take on more of a leadership role I think at that
point last year, playing with my roommate from college, Chad
Wiedmaier, was a great experience We played together for four
years at Princeton Unfortunately, he retired, but it was a great experience I got to play with Will Manny, Brodie Merrill (and) Mitch Belisle
The Cannons front office is one of the best in the league The connectivity
with the community in Boston and the whole Northeast, they do a lot of
grassroots marketing They get a ton of fans to games"
What's your favorite thing to do when in Boston? "The funny
thing about this league is you don't have a ton of time We fly in Friday
night, practice Saturday morning, play Saturday night and fly out Sunday
It's like a business trip Boston in the summer is beautiful The hotel we
stay in is on the Charles It's a great time to de-stress from the work week
It's nice hanging out with the guys and going out with them in Boston It's
an escape from my life in New York City, which is busy"
How do you prepare for a season where you play every minute of
every game? "I wouldn't want it any other way A staple of my career since
high school, I've been very fortunate to log a lot of minutes and stay healthy
That makes me a good goalie I'm very consistent That's all you can ask The more
I play, the more you can understand and anticipate where guys will shoot, the
more comfortable I get in goal and make sure I'm playing my angles as best I can"
What's your favorite thing to do when you're not playing
lacrosse? "I love to travel as much as I can Home in New York, with work
in New York, 60-hour weeks and traveling on the weekends, it's nice to hang
out in my apartment, go see a movie The coolest thing about New York is all
the great food I like to try a new restaurant every week Not everyone can
say they have the best restaurants on every corner"
Stick: "I work with Warrior/Brine, so I've used the Brine Eraser"
Helmet: "I've used Cascade, but this year I'll be using the Warrior (helmet)"
Gloves: Nemesis Pro
Pads: Warrior "I still use the chest protector I got my freshman year of
college with a Princeton 'P' stitched on the chest"
Cleats: "I don't wear cleats I only wear turf shoes I wear the Warrior
New Balance Freezes"

is a great venue there I spent a lot of time
42 NEW ENGLAND LACROSSE JOURNAL April 2017
there on the team, and now, traveling, it's
one of the best places to play"
Practice drill: "There's more drills I despise
as a goalie than I love The worst one is 3-on2s back and forth when defensemen decide
they're shooters and shoot as hard as they
can ... I enjoy transition drills getting up
What was your favorite class at Princeton? "Princeton has a good
public policy school I took a class on ethics in public policy Being taught by
a top leader in the space, that was interesting Not only is it a great institution, you're surrounded by the smartest people in the world debating topics"
What's something you want the readers to know about you?
"I did run with the bulls in Pamplona It was cool You don't sleep You go
the day before and you line up at 6 and you run with the bulls at 7:30 You
let the first one go by and chase it in and hope the rest don't catch you It's
definitely an experience"
